Every unit is different, but it really comes down to make, model, and reliability. We recommend oil and filters be changed once per year or every 100 hours whichever comes first.  But just an oil change doesn’t insure your generator is in tip top shape. We recommend it should be inspected 4 times a year to ensure it is functioning properly and will come on for the next outage. Some cases call for more visits.

Generators are made up of 3 main components: the Engine, the Gen head, and the Controller. There are so many areas for failure.  Routine oil changes, filters, and spark plugs are crucial for the longevity of the engine. The gen head can often fail due to lack of attention, ie: sitting too long w/ rust build up or when wiring fails. The controller is the brain of the whole operation. If the controller is not maintained it can cause many types of expensive failures, including engine and gen head failures. Controllers are maintained by ensuring they are receiving and sending the proper signals, cleaning, and making sure there are no bad connections, rodent damage, or natural debris and weather condtions. With the right maintenance for your unit, it can last a long time, and avoid those expensive repairs or total replacement of the generator.
